Men's Lacrosse Earns ECAC Bid
CENTERVILLE, Mass. – For the second time in school history, the Mitchell College men's lacrosse team received a berth in the ECAC Division III New England Men's Lacrosse Championship, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
The third-seeded Mariners (9-3 overall) will travel to second-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology (10-6 overall) on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. The winner of that semifinal game will move on to play at top-seeded University of New England (13-5 overall) on Saturday, May 11 at 1 p.m.
Head coach Derek Marks will take the Mariners back to the ECAC Championship, having also led them to their first postseason bid in 2011. Marks holds an overall record of 23-13 at Mitchell in three seasons.
The 2013 season has been highlighted by success. The Mariners won the inaugural New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) title by virtue of a 3-0 league record and landed five players on the all-conference first team. Mitchell also tied the school record for wins in a season and could top the mark with a victory in the postseason.
Wentworth ended the regular season with three straight losses before falling 9-8 in overtime to Roger Williams University in the first round of the CCC Tournament. The Leopards won 10 of their first 12 games, however, and produced a 4-0 record against common opponents of the Mariners (2-2).
