
Bears Tame Volleyball in Straight Sets
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team defeated Mitchell College 3-0 on Thursday evening in a non-conference match at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The Bears took the first two sets convincingly, winning 25-14 then 25-8, before the Mariners battled back but fell in the third set 27-25.
Senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) recorded a team-high eight kills for Mitchell, while freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) tallied seven kills. Junior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) continued her strong season, finishing with 14 digs, marking eighth time in eight games Lent has produced double-digit defensive digs. Sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) added 19 assists and three kills.
Coast Guard freshman Amelia Matson paced a well-balanced Bears squad with eight kills, while sophomore Sophia Rosenburg dished out 16 assists, and senior libero Kaela France racked up eight digs.
The Mariners (3-5, 0-1 GNAC) will continue their out of conference schedule with a match at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, September 21, at 11:00 am. The Bears (8-4, 0-0 NEWMAC) jump right back into action on Friday, September 20, when they play at Roger Williams.
