Mitchell Men Fall to Southern Vermont on Senior Day
NEW LONDON, CONN. - Eric Murray's 28 point, 12 rebound effort was not enough as Mitchell fell to Southern Vermont College, 80-70, on Senior Day at the Yarnall Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. For the Mountaineers, Joe Karnik (Casteton, N.Y.) poured in 25 points and pulled down 14 boards in the win.
Both teams battled through the first half to a 35-35 tie at the intermission. Eric Murray (Bridgeport, Conn.) had tallied a double-double in the first half with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mountaineers would take a 10 point lead, 51-41, at the 14:40 mark of the second half on a lay-up by Karnik. Mitchell would fight back and with 5:30 remaining in the game Murray capped a 13-2 run to take a one point lead. The Mariners then hit a dry spell, as they were held scoreless for over three minutes, while the visiting Mountaineers would capitalize and go ahead for good.
Mike DePaolo (Asbury, N.J.) would chip in with 14 points, and post player Jenel Russell (East Hampton, N.Y.) was limited to six points and nine boards as he spent much of the game in foul trouble.
Brendan Kordana (Adams, Mass.) netted 24 points, while teammate Cameron Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) scored 18 and pulled down four rebounds.
Seniors Josh Witt (New London, Conn.) and Matt Bindner (Milford, Conn.) were honored before the game for their dedication to the men's basketball program.

Mitchell returns to action on Monday, February 16th when they host cross-town opponent Coast Guard Academy at 8:00 pm.
