Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Bridgewater
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team battled from a 2-0 deficit to force a deciding fifth set, but ultimately fell by a 3-2 final to Bridgewater State University on Thursday night in a non-conference match at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Bears took the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-16. The Mariners then battled back and won the third set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-21, before Bridgewater edged out the deciding set 16-14.
Freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) recorded a collegiate career-high 20 kills, while adding 13 digs and six service aces. Senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) also picked up a double-double with 11 kills, 11 digs, and four service aces, while junior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) tallied double-digit defensive digs for the 10th time in 10 matches thus far this fall, finishing with 26. Sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) also turned in a person best, handing out a collegiate career-best 37 assists for the Mariners.
Sophomore Lily Welch paced the visitors with a career-high 16 kills and five assisted blocks to go along with 13 digs and a pair of aces. Freshman Charlotte Sullivan checked in with a collegiate-best 12 kills and three assisted blocks, while sophomore Ava Crane chipped in with 19 digs, four kills and four aces for the Bears.
In the decisive fifth set, the Bears went out to a 7-1 lead, but Mitchell eventually used a 7-1 run to tie it at 10 and took their first lead at 12-11 on a Hyde kill. An ace by Ava Crane and a kill by Lily Welch put Brigewater up, 14-13, and a kill by Welch and a service ace by freshman Natalie Fredriksen ended the match.
The Mariners (3-7, 0-1 GNAC) will continue their run of non-conference matches when they travel to face Curry College on Saturday, September 28, at 1:00 pm. The Bears (4-6, 0-0 MASCAC) are slated to open conference play when they return to action on Tuesday, October 1, at Framingham State.
