Volleyball Wins in Four Sets at Curry
MILTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team snapped a five-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon, cruising past Curry College 3-1 in a non-conference match at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.
The Mariners took the first set by a 25-18 final before the Colonels outlasted Mitchell 26-24 to even things at one set apiece. Mitchell then peeled off back to back 25-16 victories to close out the afternoon.
Two days after collecting a collegiate career-high 19 kills, freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) once again powered the Mitchell offensive attack, finishing with 19 saves on a .265 hitting percentage, to go along with 10 digs. Hyde now has double-digit kills in nine of her first 11 games to begin her collegiate career and has recorded a double-double four times.
Senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) had seven kills and 11 digs, freshman Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.) tallied six kills, and sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) handed out a match-high 28 assists. Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) continued a red hot start to her junior season, finishing with 24 defensive digs, averaging six digs per set. Lent now has double-digit digs in all 11 matches this season and has surpassed the 20 dig mark on five different occasions.
Kyah Earls led Curry with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Abby Sousa was credited with 20 assists for the home squad.
The Mariners (4-7, 0-1 GNAC) will jump back into Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play when they return to the court on Tuesday, October 1, at Anna Maria College. The Colonels (0-12, 0-1 CONE) play next on Wednesday, October 2, at Western New England University.
