Volleyball Drops Three Set Match to Conn
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision on Thursday night to crosstown rival Connecticut College in a non-conference match at Luce Field House.
The Camels bested the Mariners by set scores of 25-9, 25-21, and 25-18. Freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) and senior Allison Blun (Garden Grove, Cali.) led Mitchell with five kills apiece. Hyde added five digs and Blum tallied six digs, while junior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) finished with a team-best nine digs. Sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) dished out 15 assists and also recorded seven digs for the Mariners.
Conn opened the match on a 13-1 run and never looked back in the first set. The Mariners settled in and made things more difficult in the second set. Mitchell took its biggest lead at 16-10 following a kill by Allison Blum, and later in the set Blum added another kill to give the visitors a 21-18 advantage. However, the Camels were unfazed and closed out the stanza behind a 7-0 run. The home squad then closed the deciding set by scoring four straight points, as the Camels improved their record to 3-1 at home this fall.
Riley Lord recorded a match-high 11 kills to lead the way for Conn, and Evie Lockwood Mullaney added eight kills while Katherine Randall chipped in seven kills and a match-high 13 digs.
The Mariners (5-8, 1-1 GNAC) return to conference play with a tri-match at Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, October 5, facing New England College at 1:00 pm and the host Chargers at 3:00 pm. The Camels (9-4, 0-3 NESCAC) will next play at Wesleyan University on Saturday, October 5, at 2:00 pm.
