Volleyball Swept in GNAC Tri-Match at Colby-Sawyer
NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team suffered a pair of defeats during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match at Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday afternoon, losing first to New England College 3-1 before falling in straight sets against the host Chargers at the Dan & Kathleen Hogan Sports Center.
During Mitchell's first match of the day, the Mariners dropped the opening set to the Pilgrims 25-21 and the second set 25-23. Mitchell rebounded to take the third set, 25-20, before falling 25-21 in the fourth set. The Mariners lost by set scores of 25-19, 25-15, and 25-13 to Colby-Sawyer.
The Mariners (5-10, 1-3 GNAC) will look to snap a three game skid when they play a GNAC contest at Elms College on Wednesday, October 9, with game time scheduled for 7:00 pm.
Game 1 – NEC 3, Mitchell 1
Freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) led the way for the Mitchell offense against NEC, recording a match-high 17 kills while adding 16 digs. Senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) also notched a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) handed out a match-high 32 assists and added 10 digs. Junior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) was credited with 23 digs in the loss.
After dropping the first two sets, the Mariners battled back and opened the third set on a 6-0 run which featured a pair of kills from both Hyde and fellow freshman Molly Wordell (East Haddam, Conn.). The Pilgrims knotted the score at 8-8 on a kill by Lily-Anne Heywood, and the two squads proceeded to trade points over the ensuring minutes, eventually finding the score once again tied, this time at 17 all. A 7-0 run by Mitchell, fueled by two more Hyde kills pushed the Mariners into the driver's seat, and a Wordell kill, which was followed by a NEC bad set, sealed the set victory to keep the Mariners alive in the match.
NEC then opened the fourth set by notching four consecutive points, before pulling ahead 10-3. The Mariners managed to get within two and trailed 23-21 after an attack error was called against the Pilgrims, however kills by Deborah Villar and Samantha Winters guided sent NEC to a set victory and to their third GNAC win of the fall.
Lily-Anne Heywood racked up 13 kills and 18 digs for the Pilgrims, while Winters and Maeve Amarosa finished with 11 kills apiece.
Game 2 – CSC 3, Mitchell 0
It was Allison Blum who led the offensive attack in the second match of the day for the Mariners, as the senior racked up eight kills, five digs, and a pair of service aces. Molly Wordell added five kills, while senior Crystal Gangi (New Fairfield, Conn.) had a season high 12 digs, and Julia Lent contributed 11 digs.
The Mariners strongest period of play came when they raced out to a 7-2 lead in the second set. The Chargers, however, stormed back and knotted the score at 9-9, before going ahead 10-9, off back to back service aces from Bree Bacon, and the home squad led the rest of the way on route to victory.
Kamryn Brakemeier recorded a match-high nine kills on a .375 hitting percentage for the Chargers. Ally Majenski added eight kills, while Audra Fontes finished with 21 kills and Brooke Patnode handed out 30 assists.
