Camels Run Past Mariners in Mens Hoops Action
NEW LONDON, CONN. - The Connecticut College Camels defeated the Mariners in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday evening, 79-60. Four players scored in double digits for Conn, including Billy Karis (Potsdam, N.Y.) who scored a team-high 18 points. Eric Murray (Bridgeport, Conn.) finished with a game-high 26 points in the loss for Mitchell.
Scott Siedor (Bloomfield, Conn.) hit a jumper at the 10:18 mark of the first half to give the Camels their first double-digit lead of the game. With the half winding down, Murray made two free throws to cut the lead down to four. The host team was trailing 44-38 going into the intermission, and junior forward Murray had 19 in the half.
Conn built up a double digit lead five minutes into the second half on a lay-up by Karis, and from that point forward they would never trail by less than 10 throughout the second half. As a team, the visitors shot 48% from the field in the second half and held Mitchell to 32% shooting.
Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a solid game with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and four assists, while Dean Lampe (Hamilton, Mass.) just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine boards. Shavar Bernier (Dover, N.H.) chipped in with 11 points in the win.
For Mitchell, Jenel Russell (East Hampton, N.Y.) joined Murray in double digits with 16 points on 8-for-9 shooting from the floor.
The loss takes Mitchell's overall record to 8-12, while Conn improves to 13-9 on the season. The Mariners are back in action on Saturday, February 14th when they host the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College at 3:00 pm.
