Volleyball Storms Back for Senior Day Win Over Norwich
- NEW LONDON, Conn. – After dropping the opening set of their senior day match on Saturday afternoon, the Mitchell College women's volleyball team stormed back to topple Norwich University 3-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Prior to the match, the Mariners honored their senior student athletes; Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.), Crystal Gangi (New Fairfield, Conn.), and Brooke Taylor (Montville, Conn.
The Cadets crept by the Mariners 25-23 in the opening set, before Mitchell evened the score with another narrow victory, edging Norwich 26-24. The Mariners erupted from there, winning convincingly in the final two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-15 respectively.
Norwich had no answer for freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX), who posted a double-double with 18 kills and 11 assists. Allison Blum also registered a double-double, finishing with 17 kills and 22 digs, while Crystal Gangi (New Fairfield, Conn.) was the third Mariner with a double-double, posting 20 assists and 10 digs. Brooke Taylor set a career-high with 18 assists, and junior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) also set a career-high with 39 digs.
Katie Finn led the Cadets with nine kills, while Lillie Ells was credited with 25 digs, and Ava Nihill had 28 assists.
The Mariners (7-14, 3-7 GNAC) return to play on Tuesday, October 29, when they host the University of Saint Joseph in a GNAC match at 7:00 pm. The Cadets (1-20, 0-9 GNAC) play next at New England College on Tuesday, October 29.
