Lynx Edge Mariners 69-67 in Overtime Thriller
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Nijel Robinson (Plainsboro, N.J.) scored 26
points and hit the game-winning bucket with four seconds remaining
in overtime to lead the Lesley University men's basketball team to
victory over Mitchell College 69-67. With the win, the Lynx
improved to 5-18 (2-10 NECC) while Mitchell dropped to 8-15 (4-8
NECC).
Robinson was 11-of-20 from the floor and also led the Lynx with
four assists and two steals. The sophomore guard netted six
of Lesley's eight points in the five minute overtime.
Lesley's Jesus Trejo (Methuen, Mass.) recorded a double-double with
17 points and 14 rebounds and junior guard Matt Grassa (Everett,
Mass.) added 14 more in the triumph.
Mitchell was offensively by Eric Murray (Bridgeport, Conn.), Mike
DePaolo (Asbury, N.J.), and Jenel Russell (East Hampton, N.Y.) who
netted 22, 20, and 18 points, respectively. Russell added
five steals and three blocks to his overall solid effort.
Mariners' senior guard Josh Witt (New London, Conn.) scored just
two points but dished out seven assists and forced three
steals.
Down by two points in the final 10 seconds of overtime, Mitchell
came out of a timeout and scored on a Russell jumper off the glass
to tie the game at 67.
With no timeouts remaining, the Lynx stormed down the court and
found Robinson who hit what would be the game-winning shot with
just four seconds remaining. A last second shot by Russell
went too long as Lesley held on for the victory.
The victory came on Senior Night for the Lynx who honored Malcolm
Andrews (Medford, Mass.), Fran Cusick (Lexington, Mass.) and Dana
Dattillo (Derry, N.H). Andrews finished the game with a
game-high 19 rebounds. Cusick posted five points, a rebound,
a block, and an assist. Dattillo ran the point for the Lynx
for 40 minutes on the court.
Lesley travels to Elms College on Thursday, February 19 for an 8:00
pm game. Mitchell will play at Becker on the same day at 7:00
pm.
