THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team opened up their 2024 season by splitting a non-conference tri-match on Saturday at SUNY Maritime, rolling over the Privateers in straight sets before falling to SUNY Delhi 3-1 at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
Freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) turned in a strong performance during the day of her collegiate debut, recording 28 kills across the two matches, while junior libero Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) tallied 30 defensive digs on the day.
The Mariners (1-1, 0-0 GNAC) will host Rhode Island College in their home opener at the Yarnall Athletic Center on Thursday, September 5th, at 7:00 pm.
Match 1 – Mitchell 3, SUNY Maritime 0
The Mariners jumped out to an early lead in the opening set against the Privateers and never looked back, scoring the first three points and building up a lead that grew as large as 13. The second set was much closer, as the score was tied at 17-17 then 19-19, but an attack error pushed Mitchell into the lead and a service ace by Genna Hyde gave the Mariners a two-point lead which they would not relinquish. The third and deciding set was all Mitchell, as the visiting squad jumped ahead 15-3 and ended it with a 25-13 final.
Hyde fiished with 18 kills with a .405 kill percentage to go along with six digs and three service aces. Senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) recorded seven kills and nine digs, while lent paced the Mariners with 12 digs, and sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) handed out 26 assists.
Karelyn Rolon had nine kills and 10 digs for the Privateers, both team-high figures.
Match 2 – SUNY Delhi 3, Mitchell 1
SUNY Delhi came out of the gate strong during their first match of the day, downing Mitchell 25-14 and 25-16 before the Mariners rallied for a 25-22 victory in the third set. The Broncos were able to get the best of the Mariners in the fourth set, ending Mitchell's day with a 25-10 victory.
Once again, it was Genna Hyde leading the offensive attach for Mitchell, racking up a team-best 10 kills while adding eight digs. Allison Blum recorded nine kills, 10 digs, and five service aces, and Julia Lent dug up 18 balls.
Finley Benn had 16 kills and 15 digs for SUNY Delhi. Sage Renneisen added 11 kills and Audrey Logsdon recorded a match-high 23 digs.
