MBB Sweeps NECC Weekly Awards
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Two members of the Mitchell College men's basketball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Junior guard Mikey Buscetto was named NECC Player of the Week while freshman forward Robert Zirlis was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. The duo helped Mitchell to a 2-0 week that included road wins over Purchase College and New England College.
Buscetto, who nabbed the honor for the third time this year (Dec. 20, Nov. 15), averaged a team-high 24.0 points per game and shot 47 percent for the week. He netted a career-high 32 points and shot 6-for-11 from three-point range in the win at NEC, adding eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. He also had 16 points and dished out eight assists at Purchase.
Zirlis earned the distinction for the first time in his career. He averaged 7.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest last week while shooting at a 70-percent clip. He scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win at Purchase while shooting 6-for-8 from the floor. He also chipped in two points and four boards at NEC.
Buscetto has played in 12 games and made 11 starts while averaging team highs of 20.3 points and 7.3 assists per game. He currently leads the NECC and ranks third in the country in assists per game. Zirlis has seen action in 15 contests with eight starts and is averaging 5.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Mitchell (7-8 overall) will next play at SUNY Maritime on Tuesday, January 25 at 7 p.m.
