LAX Duo earns NECC weekly honors
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Two members of the Mitchell College men's lacrosse team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Senior James Giovanniello was named NECC Offensive Player of the Week while freshman Steven Turchetta was tabbed NECC Defensive Player of the Week. The duo led the Mariners to a 1-1 week that included a 13-11 victory over the College of Mt. St. Vincent.
Giovanniello was recognized for the first time this season. He led the Mariners in scoring for the week with four goals and three assists for seven points. He netted a career-high four goals and added an assist in the win over Mt. St. Vincent and also dished out a pair of assists in a loss to St. Joseph's College (Long Island).
Turchetta earned honors for the second time this season (March 7), making a total of 25 saves in goal over the two games. He finished with 11 saves in the victory over Mt. St. Vincent, picking up his second win of the season in the cage. He then tied a season high with 14 stops in the loss to St. Joseph's.
Giovanniello has played in all 10 games this season and leads the Mariners in scoring with 22 points on 10 goals and a team-high 12 assists. Turchetta has played in 10 games while making six starts, and he leads the team in both wins (2) and total saves (78).
Mitchell (2-8 overall) will next play at Mt. St. Mary College (NY) on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
