RIC Moves Past Women’s Volleyball in Straight Sets
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Rhode Island College women's volleyball team defeated Mitchell College in straight sets on Thursday night in a non-conference match at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The Anchorwomen held off the Mariners 25-18 in the opening set, before cruising to back to back 10-point, 25-15, decisions to secure the 3-0 win.
Freshman Genna Hyde (Cypress, TX) recorded a match-high 11 kills and added seven digs for Mitchell. Senior Allison Blum (Garden Grove, Cali.) and junior Julia Lent (Miller Place, N.Y.) racked up 18 digs apiece, while sophomore Kiersten Veenstra (Three Rivers, Mich.) paced the Mariners by dishing out 18 assists.
Sophomore Sarina Marines contributed eight kills and 13 digs for RIC, while freshman Olivia Rollinson matched her with eight kills of her own. Junior Andrayah Williams led the offensive attack for the Anchorwomen with nine kills, as sophomore Carolyn Bailey tallied up 21 digs and Yuleisy Alvelo handed out 21 assists.
The Mariners (1-2, 0-0 GNAC) will return to play on Saturday, September 7, with a pair of matches at Mass. Maritime against the Buccaneers and Anna Maria. Rhode Island College (2-0, 0-0 LEC) play a single match at Westfield State on Saturday, September 7.
