Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 to No. 22 Gordon
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The nationally ranked Gordon College men's soccer team scored twice in the opening 13 minutes en route to a 2-0 victory over Mitchell College on Monday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at Alumni Field.
Andrew Vandervoort scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season less than five minutes into the contest, and Kellen Kasiguran followed suit just over seven minutes later to give the Fighting Scots the early advantage. Gordon, which entered the match ranked 22nd in the nation and third in New England according to the NSCAA College Rankings, improved to 11-1-0 overall.
Vandervoort was at the right place at the right time for his marker. Evan Crocker played a ball into the box from the right side that the Mitchell defense tried to clear, but the ball never left the box and found its way to Vandervoort inside the top of the 18. He settled the ball before sniping the left corner to put the Fighting Scots up 1-0.
A lucky bounce helped Kasiguran net his seventh goal of the season. He challenged for a loose ball deep in Mitchell territory but couldn't get there quick enough to get a first touch. However, he deflected the attempted clear back toward the Mariners goal and over the head of goalkeeper Ramazan Sinani for the fortuitous goal.
The Fighting Scots took the 2-0 lead into the half and produced many more quality chances in the second stanza. Sinani did his best to prevent any further damage, finishing with eight saves while keeping the ball out of the back of the net over the final 45 minutes.
Gordon goalkeeper Josh Spoonhour made his first start of the season and didn't face a shot on goal while recording the shutout. The Fighting Scots held a 23-5 advantage in shots for the contest.
Mitchell (5-7-0 overall) will play its final non-conference match of the year at Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday, October 9 at 3 p.m.
