EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's soccer squad posted its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory against Mitchell College in a non-conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with JWU holding a 7-6 advantage in shots for the stanza. After a back-and-forth 20 minutes to open the second half, JWU broke the scoreless tie in the 67th minute when Adam Shafer headed in a cross from Chris Zappel for the 1-0 lead. The Wildcats then held on for the one-goal victory.
Ryan Dzierawski posted two saves in the shutout victory for Johnson & Wales while senior Kevin Woodford had five stops in the loss for Mitchell.
With the win Johnson & Wales improved to 1-5 overall while Mitchell dropped to 2-2-1 overall for the year. The Mariners return to action at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, September 21 at 4 p.m.
