NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team fell by a final of 6-0 to Rivier University on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Alumni Field.
Prior to the game, the Mariners honored their seven senior student-athletes; Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.), Matt Ladd (Griswold, Conn.), Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.), Nick Forst (Ellington, Conn.), Mike Marchetti (Waterbury, Conn.), Liam Robb (Rockaway, N.J.), and Keeano Gonzalez (New London, Conn.).
Kamar Matthew-Murray and Alejandro Quezada scored first half goals for the Raiders to give the visiting quad a 2-0 lead at halftime. Rivier erupted for four second half goals to pull away, with two coming off the foot of Aldo Vespro. Arthur Dias and Mitchell Ward also found the back of the net in the win.
Rivier outshot the Mariners 19-8, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal, while both teams had three corner kick opportunities. The freshman duo of Jose Pacheco (New London, Conn.) and Erik Portillo led the Mariners with two shots apiece. Matt Ladd also registered a shot on goal in the loss.
Dylan Kinsella got the starting nod in goal for Mitchell and turned away three shots. Sophomore Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) played the final five minutes and did not register a save. Logan Clough got the win for Rivier, stopping a pair of shots across the 76 minutes he logged in goal.
The Mariners (2-14-1, 2-11) will wrap up their season on the road Tuesday afternoon when they travel to face intrastate rival Saint Joseph's College at 4:00 pm. The Raiders (6-5-6, 4-4-5 GNAC) host Emmanuel College in their regular season finale on Tuesday, October 29.
