DUDLEY, Mass. -- The Mitchell College men's soccer team came up short on the road against Nichols College on Monday afternoon, dropping the non-conference game by a final of 5-3 at the Nichols Soccer Field.
Five different players scored for the Bison, who took the lead early and built up a 3-0 halftime lead. William Savage scored the first goal of the afternoon for the home team four minutes into the game off an assist by Nikolas Padilla. Savage then set up Tristan Phillips just minutes later, which increased the lead to two. Brady Stevenson capped the first half scoring for the Bison, firing home a a shot into the corner of the net off a feed from Tristan Phillips.
Seven minutes into the second half, Nichols lead jumped to four when John Milardo scored his first goal of the season. The Mariners finally broke through in the 73rd minute, as junior Nolan Clack tallied his second goal of the season off an assist by Noslin Antunez, however Fernando Barranco answered for the Bison less than two minutes later to push the lead back to four.
Mitchell was able to put two quick goals past the Nichols keeper down the stretch, as Jeremy Gibbs scored unassisted in the 73rd minute for his second goal of the year. Flavio Alvarado followed that up by taking a pass from Nick Ghirardi and sending it home for his first colligate goal, which trimmed the deficit to two, but that's as close as the Mariners would get.
Joey Rosa returned to net for Mitchell, making his first start since suffering an injury on September 8 at home against Worcester State. The senior keeper played all 90 minutes of action making eight saves for the visitors. Derek Axon and Franco Barreto Santana split time at goalie for the Bison, making a combined two games.
The Mariners (2-6-0) will look to right the ship when they return home on Saturday to face Johnson & Wales at 12:00 pm.
