BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday night at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The match was a rollercoaster ride for the Mariners, who trailed at intermission but rallied back early in the second half to pull ahead by one. The lead was short lived, however, as the hosts tied the game just 2:30 later and grabbed the lead six minutes thereafter.
Bryan Ramos and Nicholas Ghirardi each netted goals for Mitchell, which dropped to 0-9-2 on the season. Ramos tallied his first of the season while Ghirardi found the back of the net for the second straight game and second time this year.
The Buccaneers went ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute on a goal by Ty Chafa that was set up by Brian Tannian's cross from the left sideline. Chafa connected with the ball at the far corner of the goalie box and headed a shot inside the far post for the game's first goal.
Mitchell tied the game in the 48th minute when Eric Leuchner corralled a failed clear inside the 18-yard box and centered a pass to Ramos, who one-timed a shot home for the equalizer.
Less than four minutes later, Ruben Gomes was upended at the goal line while attempting to finish off a cross, drawing a penalty kick for the visitors. Ghirardi stepped up and calmly faked out the keeper, scoring the go-ahead goal into a wide-open right side.
Mass Maritime quickly tied the game in the 55th minute on a blast by Nicholas Vanti that deflected off a Mitchell defender and into the back of the goal. The Buccaneers then pulled ahead for good in the 61st minute on a tally by Quin Lutz off a corner.
Mitchell had a good scoring chance with 18 minutes remaining thanks to foul outside the box. Ghirardi took the free kick from 25 yards out but saw his shot slip wide of the left post.
MMA added a late insurance goal off the foot of McNeill Somers with under five minutes to play. The Buccaneers held a 14-10 advantage in total shots for the contest.
Mitchell will next host New England College on Saturday, October 16 at 1 p.m.
