SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Springfield College struck for four goals in the second half to hand Mitchell College a 4-0 defeat in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon.
Springfield's Cam Powell and Douglas Enga both notched their first career goals. The Pride picked up their third victory of the season and improved to 3-1-3 overall.
Springfield outshot Mitchell 29-8 over the course of the game, putting 15 shots on goal to the Mariners' four. The Pride also held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
With 16:08 remaining in the contest, Drew Sommer gained posession of the ball inside the box and drove a shot twoards the Mitchell goal that drilled the crossbar and deflected right to Luke Alvaro, who then headed the ball into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie.
Just 2:02 later, Powell found the back of the net with a strike from the right side into the top left corner of the net to give the Pride a 2-0 lead.
At the 11:52 mark of the second half, a corner kick sent in from Ryan Elster found Enga on the back post, who headed in the feed to push the Pride's lead to three goals.
With 6:34 left in the game, Nick Kobel passed a ball up to Evan Cheman, who played it into the box. Defender Ryan Malone was in the right spot and headed the ball just over the outstretched hands of Anthony Drake to give the Pride a late 4-0 lead.
Springfield goalkeeper Billy Schmid finished the game with four saves and picked up his third shutout of the season, while Mitchel starter Ramazan Sinani finished with nine saves and Drake added a pair.
Mitchell (3-3-1 overall) will next host Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, September 24 at 4 p.m.
