Men's Soccer Claws Back at Worcester State but Falls Short
WORCESTER, Mass. – After Mitchell College tied the score up at 2-2 in the second half, Worcester State's Jacob Jess and Ryan Kinsella each registered a goal to lift the Lancers over the Mariners, 4-2, in Saturday afternoon's contest at Coughlin Stadium.
Worcester's Matthew Dent started the scoring for the Lancers in the 30th minute when Mitchell committed a foul and permitted Eric Davis a free kick from 50 yards out central. Davis boosted the ball in the air for Dent while Mitchell goalkeeper Anthony Drake contested for the ball. Dent got a head on it first, however, and forced the ball into the net for the 1-0 advantage.
The Lancers struck again 10 minutes later when a handball inside the penalty box resulted in a Worcester State penalty kick. Matthew Stabell scored his first collegiate goal as he blasted the ball to the lower left side of the mesh to put the Lancers up 2-0.
The second half took a turn when Mitchell scored twice in the 60th minute to knot the game at 2-2. The first goal came from TJ Condon, who found a clear shot from 25 yards out on the right side and drilled a shot into the net to cut the deficit in half. Not even 15 seconds later, the duo of Andrew Nigro and Christian Tomaj forced Worcester keeper Jason Barrett out of the goal. Nigro then deposited his second marker of the season to draw the score at 2-2.
It wasn't until the 76th minute that Worcester State took back to the lead on a goal from Jess as George Siotis tapped the ball to him following a Dent throw-in from the right side.
Six minutes later, the Lancers tallied another goal as Andre Ipojuca crossed the ball from the left corner to Kinsella, who nailed the ball in the back of the net for the 4-2 gain.
Mitchell had another chance for a goal in the 87th minute when Tomaj took a shot from the right side that bounced off Worcester's goalkeeper, allowing for Zavier Veliz to take another toll at it. However, Barrett stored the ball and registered his fourth save on the day.
Barrett (1-0) registered his first win of the season and finished with four saves. Seth Strader suffered his second loss of the season in a four-save second half performance.
Mitchell (0-3-0 overall) will next host Mount Ida College on Wednesday, September 14 at 4:30 p.m.
