Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 at Babson
BABSON PARK, Mass. — In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, Babson College defeated Mitchell College, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson, which has won four of its last six matches, improved to 8-7-0 on the year, while Mitchell dropped to 4-8-1 overall.
Jackson Greenspan and Youcef Ziad each supplied goals for the Beavers, while Pat O'Rourke, Ted Hilger, Noah Parker and Luke Beaulieu all recorded an assist. Steven Heintzelman, who was making his first career start, finished with two saves.
Goalkeeper Seth Strader turned away seven shots for the Mariners.
The home team jumped on top in the 13th minute when Ziad ran onto a ball over the Mitchell back line and touched it past Strader before finding the open net for his team-leading eighth goal of the year. The Beavers narrowly missed on a trio of opportunities to extend their lead in the opening half, which included Strader denying Andrew Josephs following a corner kick in the 34th minute.
The Mariners had two of the best scoring chances of the second half, but Heintzelman handled both to keep the hosts in front. He denied a blast from the top of the box by Nicholas Ghirardi in the 48th minute, and then came off his line to smother a shot by Christian Urena following a giveaway in the 66th minute.
The Beavers finally put the game away with an insurance tally from Greenspan in the 76th minute. Strader made a kick save on Parker's shot from the left side of the box, but Mitchell was unable to clear the ball and Greenspan headed home O'Rourke's service from the left flank to make it 2-0.
Babson finished with a 21-4 edge in shots and an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Mitchell returns to action at Dean College on Saturday, October 21 at 1 p.m.
