JOHNSON, Vt. - The Mitchell College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw at Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Andrew Nigro scored the game's first goal in the opening half to put the Mariners (3-1-1 overall) on top, but the Badgers (2-3-1 overall) equalized in the second stanza off the foot of Dominic Caforia.
The Badgers utilized a strategic passing game over the first 39 minutes of play, keeping the ball on the outside channels and spreading out Mitchell's squad. Despite Johnson State's strong defense, Nigro took a one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Alex Pakatar and found the back of the net. It was his first goal of the season, and it gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Mitchell kept Johnson State scoreless for 33 minutes of the second stanza until Caforia capitalized on a penalty kick. The score then remained tied for the remainder of regulation and both overtime periods, although each side had numerous attempts to end the game in extra time.
Pakatar finished the game with three saves while his senior keeper Ramazan Sinani stopped nine shots for the Mariners.
Mitchell will wrap up its weekend trip in Vermont with a match at Lyndon State College on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
