Men's Soccer Comes From Behind To Earn First Win at Worcester State
WORCESTER, Mass. - Mitchell College came back from a goal down to claim its first men's soccer victory of the season on Wednesday night, winning 2-1 at Worcester State University in non-conference action at Coughlin Field.
William Ferguson and Quinn Outerbridge each netted goals for the Mariners, who improved to 1-2-0 overall. The goals were the first of the season for each.
The Lancers took an early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute off Ethan Melia's first goal of the season. The Lancers pushed the ball upfield, allowing Gift Kalombo to place a cross right at the front of goalie box, giving Melia a clear shot at the vacated cage.
The Mariners responded just over two minutes later with a goal of their own. A foul in the box gave Mitchell a penalty kick, and Ferguson made no mistake, tucking the PK into the bottom-right corner of the net to level the score.
The Lancers entered the half even with the Mariners at 1-1. Mitchell outshot Worcester State 7-5 over the first 45 minutes.
Mitchell defender Daniel Hotaling made a spectacular goal-line save to prevent the Lancers from taking the lead early in the second half. After a free kick gave the Lancers what appeared to be an open net, Hotaling came all the way to back line to stop Joe Donnelly's attempt at the go-ahead goal.
In the 70th minute, a series of shots at WSU goalkeeper Henri Guilmette ended with a goal off the foot of Outerbridge. Guilmette made impressive back-to-back saves during the flurry, but could not corral the rebound to prevent Outerbridge's eventual game winner on the third attempt.
The Lancers had chances to equalize in the final minute of play, but some athletic stops by goalkeeper Seth Strader kept Mitchell's lead intact. His first save came with a minute to go off a free kick, a laser to the top-left corner which he punched out of bounds. Worcester State then had two more corners in the final minute, the second of which produced a shot from the right side of the box with 10 seconds to go. Strader was there once again to make a leaping grab and seal the victory.
Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College in its conference opener on Saturday, September 15 at 3:30 p.m.
