NASHUA, N.H. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 final at Daniel Webster College in NECC play on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Spencer Bernard netted the go-ahead goal 2:47 into the second half, and Kyle Walton added an insurance tally in the 58th minute for the DWC offense. Joe Keene made 11 saves in goal to help the Eagles (6-4-1, 2-1 NECC) halt a three-game winless streak. Mitchell (3-6-1, 1-2 NECC) dropped its third straight contest.
The teams finished even in shots on goal (11-11) and after a scoreless opening half, DWC pressed quickly to open the second. Eagle fullback Andrew Donovan sent a long pass straight up the middle to Alex Towne, who headed it forward through two defenders to a streaking Bernard. Bernard beat the defense and tucked a 10-yarder past Mitchell keeper Kevin Woodford to break the scoreless tie.
Walton would up it to 2-0 at the 57:22 mark, heading home an Alex Jackson corner kick off the left post back to the top right corner.
Mitchell pressed but Keene, who had six stops in the second half, knocked down a terrific shot from Tommy Derosier with 22 minutes remaining and followed with two point-blank saves in the final 10 minutes. Mitchell's James Gleason had the first good look with eight minutes to go, and Derosier provided the second with three minutes left.
DWC finished with a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and an 18-15 edge in total shots. Woodford had nine stops for Mitchell.
Mitchell will next host Springfield College on Wednesday, October 12 at 4 p.m.
