NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team erupted for five goals in the first half, taking down Mitchell College, 5-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Wednesday evening at Celentano Field.
Three players registered both a goal and an assist for the Falcons, who outshot the Mariners 17-8. Aiden Coelho opened the scoring for Albertus 90 seconds into the match, before Joao Oilveira made it 2-0 in favor of the home squad in the 28th minute. Just one a minute later, Roger Baldwin made it a three goal advantage, while Lorenzo Lauria and Matheus Pimenta added goals over the next 15 minutes.
Sophomore Nathan Da Cruz (Seymour, Conn.) and senior Nick Forst (Ellington, Conn.) finished with two shots on goal apiece in the loss, while sophomore Jesse Jenkins surrendered five goals and turned away four shots across the opening 45 minutes. Senior Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) came on to play the second half in goal, not registering a save.
David Lucero earned the win for Albertus, making four saves. Luke Thomas also saw 14 minutes in goal and made one save.
The Mariners (2-13-1, 2-10 GNAC) will return to New London for their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, October 26, when they host Rivier at 11:00 am. This will also serve as senior day for Mitchell. The Falcons (8-4-4, 8-1-3 GNAC) host Lasell University in their next match on Saturday, October 16.
