Nigro's Hat Trick Highlights 7-0 Win Over SVC
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team came away with a 7-0 victory over Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Alumni Field.
Junior Andrew Nigro tallied his first career hat trick as the Mariners improved to 4-5-1 overall and remained unbeaten in league play at 2-0-0. Four other players also found the back of the net as Mitchell recorded season highs in goals and margin of victory.
Nigro notched his first of the game in the eighth minute when sophomore Juan Perez sent a through ball into the box. Nigro collected the feed and finished his strike to the far post to give the Mariners a 1-0 advantage. He struck again in the 26th minute when he dribbled past a defender and beat the keeper to the far post for a 2-0 lead.
In the 29th minute the Mariners were awarded a penalty kick on a Southern Vermont foul inside the 18-yard box. Freshman Andrew Storton buried the penalty kick with a hard finish to the right side for his team-leading fifth tally of the season.
Mitchell notched its fourth goal on Cody Poirier's first marker of the season. In the 34th minute the Mariners were awarded a free kick on a Southern Vermont offside call. Sophomore Robert Pullan serviced the restart that was brought down and finished by Poirier at the near post.
Mitchell's final goal of the first half came in the 38th minute on a strike from sophomore Yianni Longinidis. Longinidis collected a rebound off of a shot taken by teammate Todd Zessin and buried his attempt past the SVC keeper. The Mariners carried the 5-0 advantage into the break after outshooting the Mountaineers 8-1 in the half.
Nigro completed his hat trick in the 74th minute when he settled a punt serviced by sophomore keeper Anthony Drake and netted his strike far post. His finish marked the first hat trick by a Mitchell player this season.
Pullan rounded out the score sheet with a goal in the 78th minute. Sophomore Jarron Walter crossed a ball from the left side that Pullan pushed far post. The Mariners held the seven goal advantage until the final horn to secure their second consecutive conference win.
Drake played all 90 minutes in goal and notched his fourth win of the season. SVC keeper Noah Chani finished the game with three saves.
Mitchell will next host Johnson State College on Wednesday, October 7 at 3 p.m. Southern Vermont (1-9-0 overall, 0-2-0 NECC) returns to action with a trip to SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday, October 6 at 4 p.m.
