Men's Soccer Wins 1-0 on Senior Day
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team stayed hot with a 1-0 victory over Lesley University on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Alumni Field.
The Mariners, who dealt the Lynx their first conference loss of the season, have won their last three games. Mitchell improved to 4-9-1 overall and 3-2-0 in NECC play.
Julian Cortez supplied the lone goal midway through the first half on a penalty kick, and Mitchell kept Lesley off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest. Mitchell goalkeeper Seth Strader finished with three saves to record his first shutout of the season.
Cortez drew the penalty kick in the 25th minute when he was fouled hard from behind while dribbling in toward goal. He buried the penalty attempt into the right corner for his team-leading fourth tally of the year.
Lesley had chances to equalize in the second half but came up empty. The Lynx's best chance came in the 70th minute when Jack Wadleigh unleashed a shot that hit off the left post. Shane Rockenbach (Long Beach, Calif.) then looked to stuff in the rebound, but defender Daniel Hotaling came up with a big stop at the goal line to keep the Mariners in front.
Mitchell played shorthanded for the final 9:23 of regulation due to a red card but was able to hold on. The Lynx produced three shot attempts during the stretch but couldn't put one on frame.
Lesley goalkeeper David Crutchfield finished with a pair of saves in the contest.
Prior to the game the Mariners honored four seniors–Strader, Christian Urena, James Shea and Tyler Hubert–in a special ceremony. All four got starting nods in the final regular season home game of their careers.
Mitchell will close out the regular season at Dean College on Wednesday, October 30 at 3 p.m. Lesley (7-9-0 overall, 4-1-0 NECC) returns to action at home against Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
