NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback to crosstown rival Connecticut College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference showdown.
The shorthanded Mariners played hard but yielded penalty kicks in the 38th and 48th minutes, which Conn converted into a 2-0 advantage. Jake Gehron added a pair of scores in the final five minutes of regulation to record his first career hat trick.
Conn goalkeeper Peter Silvester made his first career start and didn't face a shot on goal, recording the team's seventh shutout of the season. Mitchell's Dylan Kinsella made nine saves against 32 total shots.
The only goal of the first half came after Jake Creus was fouled on the left side of the box. Gehron took the ensuing penalty kick and tucked his shot into the right corner, just out of the reach of the diving Kinsella.
Minutes into the second half, another foul in the box gave the visitors the chance to add to their lead. This time it was Aiden Scales who buried the attempt for his first goal of the season.
The lead remained 2-0 until the final minutes of the contest. Creus sprung Gehron for his second goal with 4:35 to play, and the latter cemented the hat trick with 16 seconds to go on a feed from Bruce Doyle. Gehron's goal total now stands at five on the year.
The Camels improved to 10-3-0 overall and have won seven of their last eight games. Conn returns to action at home against Tufts University on Saturday, October 23 at 2:30 p.m.
Mitchell (0-10-3 overall) will next play at Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m.
