NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sixth-seeded Daniel Webster College scored goals in each half to upend third-seeded Mitchell College, 2-0, in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Senior Lino Chaves put the Eagles on the board in the 11th minute and junior Brad Hosey added an insurance goal on a penalty kick in the 73rd. Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Hamilton made three saves to record his eighth clean sheet of the season.
Daniel Webster (9-9-1 overall) won a postseason game for the first time since 2010 and improved to 5-3-0 all-time in the conference tournament. The Eagles advance to the semifinals and will play at second-seeded Newbury College on Friday, November 1 at 2 p.m.
Chaves gave Daniel Webster the early lead by being in the right place at the right time. Paul Hoy served a ball into the box from the right sideline that Mitchell goalkeeper Ramazan Sinani came out to pluck out of the air. However, the ball ended up squirting out of his hands and behind him, and Chaves was there to deposit the loose ball into a wide open net for his third goal of the season.
The Eagles took the 1-0 lead into the half and clung to the margin for the first 27 minutes of the second stanza. Freshman Erick Germano then wove his way through the Mitchell defense with some spectacular moves and ended up drawing a penalty in the box when he was taken down from behind. Hosey took the ensuing penalty kick and buried it into the left corner for his third marker of the season.
The Mariners fought to the end but couldn't generate any strong scoring chances. Senior Zachary Simmons took a crack at the goal from outside the 18 in the final 10 minutes, but Hamilton was there for the stop.
Mitchell held an 11-9 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Sinani finished with two saves.
Mitchell ends the season with an overall record of 7-11-0.
