NEW LONDON, Conn. – In its second clash with a top-25 program in five days, the Mitchell College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat at 23rd-ranked Connecticut College on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Freeman Field.
Liam Donelan and Freddy Stokes each netted second-half goals as the Camels opened their season with a win. First-year head coach Reuben Burk also picked up the first win of his collegiate career.
After a scoreless first half which saw Conn College outshoot the Mariners by a 14-1 margin, the hosts struck twice in a span of 2:36 to take full control. Donelan put the first goal on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute with a header off a corner kick from Matt Butera. Stokes then doubled the margin in the 54th minute, evading a defender and firing a shot to the near post past goalkeeper Seth Strader.
Conn College's AJ Marcucci and Chris MacKay combined for the shutout and didn't face a shot on goal. Strader made five saves against 22 total shots.
Mitchell (0-2-0 overall) will next host Worcester State University on Tuesday, September 10 at 3:30 p.m.
