CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision in New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Elms College.
Gerard Lawler scored what proved to be the game winner just four minutes into the match as the Blazers picked up their first conference win of the season. With the win, Elms improved to 2-5-0 overall, 1-1-0 in NECC play, while Mitchell moved to 3-4-0 on the season, 1-1-0 in NECC action.
Elms netted its early first goal when Josh DiNoto played a corner kick service to the head of Anthony Nitri, who directed it to the foot of Lawler. Lawler came into the middle and fired the ball into the right corner of the net to give the Blazers a 1-0 advantage.
The sides played even soccer for much of the contest as both teams finished with 10 shots in the game. Elms held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Blazers scored their second goal when Joelle Reyes connected a brilliant through ball to Adam O'Grady, who then chipped the ball past the keeper and played it into the empty net at the 84:08 mark to seal the 2-0 victory.
Goalkeeper Nicholson Pennant earned a save in the victory, playing the first 45 minutes between the pipes for Elms. Christian Kostka saw the next 41:43 in goal and made two saves, while John Matrisciano logged the final 3:17 to help preserve the shutout.
