QUINCY, Mass. -- The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 final to Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday night in New England Collegiate Conference action at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
The match was tied at 1-1 in the second half when an own goal in the 57th minute proved costly for the Mariners. The Lions held on down the stretch to improve to 10-6-0 overall and 3-0-0 in league play.
Mitchell drew first blood with a score in the 26th minute off the foot of Nicholas Ghirardi, his team-leading third tally of the season. Mason Rubino set things up by playing a pass into the right side of the box for Ghirardi, who one-timed a shot that deflected off ENC keeper Erik Berg before crossing the goal line.
It took five minutes for the hosts to equalize off a corner kick. Leonardo Castro's service ball found Jaime Romero for a shot that slipped just inside the far post.
With the score tied 1-1 in the second half, Mitchell goalkeeper Joey Rosa came out to make a brilliant stop on a one-on-one attempt against Leon Zaffaonato. However, the ball popped up right in front of the goal, and a defender's attempt to head the ball away ended up putting it in the back of the net for the go-ahead tally.
Rosa, who finished with nine saves, made five more stops in the final 34 minutes to keep the Mariners in the hunt. Mitchell's lone shot on goal came in the final two minutes on a header by Dylan Lucey, but keeper Tyler Ferreira made the save to secure the win.
Mitchell (0-11-3 overall, 0-2-2 NECC) will next host Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday, October 26 at 3:30 p.m.
