Men’s Soccer Comes Up Empty Against Norwich
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team came out on the losing end of a 2-0 decision against GNAC foe Norwich University on Wednesday afternoon on Alumni Field.
The Mariners had difficulty breaking through against a stout Cadet defense, managing just seven shots, three in the first half and four after halftime.
After 28 scoreless minutes to begin play, the Cadets broke open a scoreless game with 16:27 remaining in the opening half when they were awarded a free kick which was placed outside the penalty area on the far side of the field near the corner. Norwich freshman Diego Fuentes took the kick and delivered a shot that ricocheted off the top post and landed at the feet of a charging Kam Jorgenson. The junior capitalized on his opportunity, striking the ball with his left foot at close range off the rebound for the first goal of the afternoon.
Mitchell would hold Norwich scoreless for the remainder of the first half and for the first 12 minutes of the second half, but in the 58th minute the Cadets were awarded a free kick at the top of box, which junior Cullen Swett booted past a diving Jenkins into the back of the net. The Cadets added their final goal of the game just over a minute later, when Diego Fuentes pushed a through ball to Aidan Dwyer, who sent it home.
Norwich outshot Mitchell 25-7 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Sophomore Snadooby Robert (New London, Conn.) registered two shots for the Mariners, while Matt Ladd (Griswold, Conn.), Chris Costa (Bayport, N.Y.), and Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.) each were credited with one shot on goal.
Jesse Jenkins logged all 90 minutes in net for the Mariners, finishing with a season-high 11 saves and a.786 save percentage. Nicolas Lanza picked up the win in goal for the Cadets, logging one save while playing into the 79th minute.
The Mariners (2-7-3, 2-6-2 GNAC) will look to get back on track when they play next on Saturday, October 14th, in a GNAC showdown with Johnson & Wales University at 11:00 am. The Cadets (4-2-6, 4-1-5 GNAC) visit Lasell University on Saturday, October 14th.
