NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Aki Freeman scored a pair of goals to help power the Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team past Mitchell College 4-0 in a non-conference tilt on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Freeman wasted little time in putting the Bears on top, netting his third goal of the fall in the third minute of the match, before putting the Mariners in a two goal hole by ripping a shot past Mitchell keeper Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) 10 minutes later. The score would remain 2-0 through halftime until sophomore Michael Porter found the back of the net for the first time this season, and senior Micah Messner capped the scoring the final goal of the game in the 77th minute.
The Mariners were unable to generate much offensice attack against a stout Bears defense, mustering just three shots, two of them coming on goal. The shots on goal came courtesy of senior Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.) and freshman Sebastian Duffy (Groton, Conn.), while Coast Guard got off 23 shots, seven of which came on goal.
Sophomore Jesse Jenkins got the start in goal for Mitchell and made two saves while surrendering a pair of goals. Senior Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) came on for the second have and also allowed two goals, making just one save.
Samuel Linkous and Connor Hickey combined to produce a clean sheet for the Bears.
The Mariners (0-1-1, 0-0 GNAC) will return to action on Tuesday, September 10, when they open conference play at Lasell University. The Bears (3-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) will continue their season with a matchup at home against Worcester State on Saturday, September 7.
