NEW LONDON, Conn. – Anna Maria senior forward Rubelsi Moran delivered the eventual game winning goal in the 77th minute, helping to propel the AMCATS past the Mitchell College men's soccer team in a GNAC battle on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Moran's goal came 12 minutes after the Mariners got on the board for the first time in the game, knotting the score on the first collegiate goal by freshman Sean Khan (Wethersfield, Conn.), which came off a throw in by senior Matt Ladd (Griswold, Conn.) and a header assist by fellow senior Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.). Anna Maria opened up the scoring 27 minutes into the match when sophomore Thomas Terry fired home a goal off an assist by senior Iweka Iweka.
Kahn paced the Mariners with a team-high four shots, two on goal, while Lucey and freshman Gabe Ansani (Trumbull, Conn.) each also logged shots on goal.
Senior Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) logged all 90 minutes in goal and turned away six shots. Graduate student Valter Santiao picked up in the win in goal for the AMCATS, registered three saves along the way.
Anna Maria outshot the Mariners 20-9, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal, while each team saw three corner kick opportunities.
The Mariners (0-5-1, 0-4 GNAC) will look to right the ship when they travel to face the University of Hartford in a non-conference tilt on Monday, September 23, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 pm. The AMCATS (5-1, 3-1 GNAC) jump right back into conference play on Wednesday, September 25, when they visit Johnson & Wales University.
