NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team picked up their second conference win of the season of Tuesday afternoon, holding off Dean College 2-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at Alumni Field.
Junior Snadooby Robert (New London, Conn.) and sophomore Nathan Da Cruz (Seymour, Conn.) notched goals for the Mariners, who snapped a 1-1 tie on Da Cruz's team-leading fifth goal of the fall midway through the second half. Da Cruz has now recorded a goal in three consecutive games.
The Mariners took an early lead on Robert's first goal of the season after a crossing pass was deflected by the defense and settled at the foot of the striker, who took possession and sent it sailing past the Dean goalkeeper. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the home team until the Bulldogs knotted the score by converting on a penalty kick opportunity, with the goal being scored by Sean Doherty.
The game winning goal came with 27:03 remaining when senior captain Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.) sent a through pass to a sprinting Da Cruz, who then split two defenders and ripped home a shot from 10 yards out on the right side of the box into the left corner of the net.
Dean threatened over the final 30 minutes, outshooting the Mariners 10-8 in the second half, but could not break through for the equalizer. The Bulldogs also outshot the Mariners 19-12, while the two squads were dead even with five corner kick oppertunities apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) turned away seven shots over 90 minutes for the win. Dean's Jake Godwin registered five saves in the loss.
The Mariners (2-11-1, 2-8 GNAC) play next in a GNAC tilt at Emmanuel College on Saturday, October 19, at 12:00 pm. The Bulldogs (3-9-1, 2-7-1) will look to snap a two game losing skid on Saturday, October 19, when they host New England College.
