MEN'S SOCCER BATTLES IT OUT WITH CURRY
NEW LONDON, CONN.---Mitchell College Men's Soccer lost a hard fought 8-5 battle with Colonel's of Curry College on Alumni Field Saturday afternoon. The win is Curry's second of the year. They leave New London at 2-4-3. Mitchell's loss sets them at 0-7-1, still shy of their first victory.
Curry was the first to find the back of the net three minutes into the game off an unassisted goal from junior Clayton Corto (Manchester, Conn.) when he blasted one in from the left corner of the box. Mitchell answered at the 40 minute mark when junior Kevin Patterson (Naragansett, R.I.) slipped one past the keeper off an assist from sophomore Peter Morano (New Canaan, Conn.).
Colonel senior Adam Gould (Hermon, Me.) took the lead back at 34 minutes with his unassisted goal. Corto took the momentum and completed a hat trick scoring two additional goals over the next 10 minutes (26:13; 22:33). Mitchell freshman Josh Wright (Killingworth, Conn.) tallied an unassisted goal at 9:35. Curry finished the half with a goal off a corner kick by junior John Joe Hallssey (Boston, Mass.).
Mitchell junior Josh Griffo (Higganum, Conn.) started the second half offence five minutes in with his point off an assist by Wright. An own goal by Curry brought the score to 5-4 in the 61st minute. Gould (64:46), Junior Sean Harrison (Hope Valley, R.I.) (73:56), and classmate Jeff Shea (Canton, Mass.) (78:26) rounded out the scoring for Curry. Mitchell's final goal of the game came from a header by senior captain Niko Papathanasiou (New London, Conn.) with an assist by Griffo (81:34).
Mitchell will be back at it Sunday afternoon for a 1:00 pm kickoff with Bridgewater State College, a make-up game from earlier this month. Curry will head to Wentworth Institute of Technology for their Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.
