Mariners Finishes in the NECC Conference Undefeated, 6-0
October 21, 2008, NEW LONDON, CONN.--Mitchell started the game pressuring the Becker defense with seven shots on goal, but it wasn't until the 27th minute on a pass from freshman Howard Johnson (New London, CT) to freshman striker James Gleason (Old Lyme, CT) who drilled one in for the Mariners. Ten minutes later, senior captain Justin Curtis (Fairfield, CT) stole a ball from Becker offensive run and drove the ball upfield and shot a low drive to sophomore Jaime Serrano (Clinton, CT) who drilled the ball into the lower right corner to have Mitchell go up 2-0 at the half.
After half time, Becker came back with a new game plan pressuring the Mitchell defense and 11 minutes into the second half, Samuel Adjei scored to bring Becker within one. Ten minutes later, Becker's Tim Howard delivered a pass to Ryan Miller to tie the game 2-2. The remaining 17 minutes were scoreless forcing overtime in the conference match-up.
Five minutes into overtime, Becker's Scott Medeiros was carded for a foul to set up a direct kick by Mitchell senior, Josh Griffo (Higganum, CT). From 20 yards out on a perfectly struck ball Griffo's kick cleared the Becker defensive wall and bent into the upper left corner giving the Mariners the overtime win and sole possession of first place in the NECC conference.
