Men's Soccer Picks Up First Win at Lehman

WEST BRONX, N.Y. - The Mitchell College men's soccer team picked up
its first victory of the 2009 season with a 6-1 win at Lehman
College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mariners (1-2-0 overall) broke out in a big way on offense.
Sophomore forward James Gleason notched a hat trick to lead the
attack, the first of his career. Three other Mariners- sophomore
Howie Johnson, senior Alex Deltgen and junior Jaime Serrano-also
netted their first goals of the season.
Mitchell got to work right away, as Serrano scored off a feed from
sophomore Tommy Derosier in the seventh minute for a 1-0 lead.
Mitchell would put two more goals on the scoreboard over the next
10 minutes, both on unassisted efforts. Gleason scored in the 10th
minute and Deltgen added another in the 16th minute as the Mariners
extended the lead to three goals.
Mitchell took the 3-0 margin into the intermission and outshot
Lehman 16-4 in the first half. The Lightning (0-6-0 overall)
bounced back with an early second half goal from Daniel Brentuo to
cut the deficit to two, but Gleason answered back just over two
minutes later with his second score of the game.
Gleason netted his final goal in the 71st minute while Johnson
added the finishing touch in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Kevin
Woodford made a pair of saves in goal to earn his first win of the
season. Classmate Dan Valentine made his season debut and finished
out the final 13 minutes in goal, recording one save.
Mitchell will next play at the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday,
September 16 at 7 p.m.
