Albertus Magnus Tops Men's Soccer 2-0
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer
team dropped a 2-0 decision to Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday
afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Falcons (7-1-0 overall) won their seventh straight game thanks
to first-half goals from Steven Zapata and Rafael Guillen. Albertus
Magnus held a 19-6 advantage in shots for the contest and also
enjoyed a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Zapata netted the game-winning goal in the 26th minute after a
Mitchell foul left him with a direct kick from just outside the
box. The Mariners lined up a wall inside the 18 and all jumped when
the kick was taken. Zapata hit a low ball under the wall and to the
left corner of the goal that was out of the reach of goalkeeper
Kevin Woodford. The goal tied Zapata for the team lead with four on
the season.
The Falcons added their second goal in the 38th minute off another
restart in Mitchell territory. Chris Long played a long ball into
the box from midfield that bounced and found Guillen, who was
rushing to the far post. He finished off the pass for his third
goal of the season and gave Albertus Magnus a 2-0 lead heading into
the half.
Albertus Magnus continued to attack in the second half but came up
empty. Jamal Howard hit the crossbar in the 57th minute, and
Alphonse Buccitti was denied a score on a diving stop by Woodford
in the 64th. Woodford finished with six saves on the day while
Donato Piroscafo made three to record the clean sheet.
Mitchell (2-3-0 overall) kicks off conference play at Southern
Vermont College on Saturday, September 25 at 3 p.m.
