Men's Soccer Blanks Emmanuel
BOSTON – The Mitchell College men's soccer team came away
with a 2-0 victory over Emmanuel College in a non-conference
match-up on Wednesday evening at Roberto Clemente Field.
The two teams traded possession back and forth for the early part
of the contest. Senior Jaime Serrano had
the first major scoring opportunity of the game, blasting a
right-footed shot low to the far corner of the net. Saints
goalkeeper Carlos Perez was quick to react and managed to smother
the ball with lighting reflexes before it did any damage.
The Mariners (4-3-0 overall) struck first against the Saints (4-5-1
overall), with senior Will Frohnhoefer
delivering a bouncing ball across the front of the net for teammate
James
Gleason to knock into the goal for an early 1-0 advantage.
Gleason's first goal of the season would be all the scoring
for the opening half.
The Saints and Mariners continued to play even soccer into the
second half, when Jordan LaPorte helped save a goal for the
hosts. He stood in the perfect spot in front of the net to block a
sure goal for the Mariners and keep it a one-goal match.
Allan Parrelli nearly leveled the score for the Saints, ripping a
shot over the diving keeper towards the top of the net. The ball
bounced off the crossbar and back into play to keep the Saints down
by one.
Emmanuel found its biggest chance of the game when Jesse
Tannetta was pushed down from behind in the box to earn a penalty
kick for the Saints. However, Mathew Koenemann's attempt
sailed wide right and kept the score at 1-0.
Kevin Shirley almost grabbed a late score for the Saints, shooting
a long ball that tipped off of the goalie's fingers and ricocheted
once again off the crossbar. Mitchell then added its second score
of the game moments later when sophomore Michael
Berthiaume launched a long, looping shot that went just beyond
Perez's outstretched hands and into the corner of the net.
Perez tallied four saves for the Saints while junior keeper Kevin
Woodford notched five for the Mariners. Woodford also recorded
his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career.
Mitchell returns to the pitch at Springfield College on Sunday,
October 3 at 1 p.m.
