Men's Soccer Shut Out at Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Springfield College men's soccer team
posted a 3-0 win over visiting Mitchell College on Sunday afternoon
in a non-conference clash.
Danny Amato was responsible for a pair of assists in the win, while
Ryan Malone tallied the game winner just 5:39 into the contest. The
win boosted Springfield's record to 8-3 on the season, while
Mitchell evened its record at 4-4.
Malone netted his team-leading fifth goal of the year in the sixth
minute as he buried an Amato corner kick into the top right corner
of the net. Mitchell nearly tied the game with nine minutes
remaining in the first half as John Burkart's shot
hit the post. The ball deflected towards Christopher
Rapuano, whose shot was snuffed out by Springfield goalie Chris
Walton.
In the second half, Springfield's Dan Sheldon and Tyler Fletcher
each scored their first collegiate goals as the Pride rolled to a
three-goal victory. After a free kick by Amato was initially
blocked, Sheldon corralled a bouncing ball and slotted home a goal
in the 59th minute. Fletcher added the final goal of the game in
the 76th minute as he received a pass from Amato and slotted his
shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Walton and DJ Brock combined for the shutout, with Walton making
two saves. Kevin Woodford
made six saves in goal for the Mariners, while on two occasions
Mitchell defenders cleared the ball off the goal line, preventing a
pair of Springfield goals.
Mitchell returns to conference play at Elms College on Wednesday,
October 6 at 7 p.m.
