Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw Against CCNY
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team
played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime against the City College of
New York on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After 85 minutes of scoreless soccer, Mitchell (6-5-2 overall)
scored what looked to be the game-winning goal in the 86th minute
off the foot of senior Will
Frohnhoefer. Classmate Christopher Rapuano slipped a pass to
Frohnhoefer on the right side, and he buried a shot from a tough
angle into the far netting for his second goal of the season.
CCNY (5-9-2 overall) bounced right back, netting the equalizer less
than two minutes later. Alin Sandru started the play with a throw
in to Kerille Bruno, who then found Muhammad Zakari (Kazaure,
Nigeria) streaking to the top of the box. Zakari ripped his shot
into the top corner of the goal for his team-leading 10th tally of
the season.
Frohnhoefer had the best chance to score the golden goal for the
Mariners in overtime, but his shot in the 91st minute sailed just
over the crossbar. Mitchell outshot CCNY 5-2 in extra time but
neither team put a shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Woodford
made four saves for the Mariners while Tayfun Kucuk finished with
eight for the Beavers.
Mitchell returns to conference play against Wheelock College on
Saturday, October 23 at noon. Prior to the game, the Mariners will
honor their seven seniors in a special ceremony.
