Men's Soccer Tops Wheelock, 7-1
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team
remained unbeaten in conference play with a 7-1 victory over
Wheelock College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Mitchell (7-5-2 overall, 4-0-1 NECC) exploded for a season-high
seven goals and held a 21-3 edge in shots over Wheelock (0-14-0
overall, 0-5-0 NECC). Senior Christopher Rapuano
led the Mariners with two goals and two assists while classmate Jaime Serrano
added two goals and a helper.
The Mariners got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute on Rapuano's
first goal of the day on a feed from junior Dustin Huguenin.
Mitchell then jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals scored by junior James Gleason
and Serrano that came just 13 seconds apart in the 20th minute.
Senior Will
Frohnhoefer later tacked on a goal in the 33rd minute to give
Mitchell a 4-0 lead at the halftime intermission.
Serrano and Rapuano each added goals in the second half to increase
the margin. Serrano's tally in the 51st minute was his team-leading
eighth of the season while Rapuano netted his third of the season
in the 85th minute. Sandwiched in between was the third goal of the
year from sophomore Michael
Berthiaume.
Wheelock scored its lone goal with 1:22 remaining off the foot of
Ian Driscoll. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.
Wheelock goalkeeper EJ Patch finished with five saves for the game.
Juniors Kevin
Woodford and Derek Ponciano
split time in goal for the Mariners and combined for one save.
Prior to the contest, the Mariners honored their seven
seniors—Serrano, Rapuano, Frohnhoefer, John Burkart,
Terrence Mulhern, Patrick Nielsen
and Steven
Barnett—in a special ceremony. Each player made the start
in the final home game of his career, and the group accounted for
five of the seven goals in the game.
Mitchell will next play at Lesley University on Wednesday, October
27 at 8 p.m. The Mariners and Lynx are the only teams in the NECC
without a conference loss this season.
