Six Men's Soccer Players Earn NECC Recognition
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Six members of the Mitchell College men's soccer team earned New England Collegiate Conference recognition, as announced by Commissioner Del Malloy on Monday afternoon.
Senior co-captain Jaime Serrano led the way by landing a spot on the NECC All-Conference First Team. A trio of juniors—James Gleason, Dustin Huguenin and Kevin Woodford—was named to the NECC All-Conference Second Team while senior John Burkart and sophomore Matt Grandy garnered honorable mention status. All awards were determined by a vote of the conference's eight head coaches.
Serrano was one of three forwards named to the first team. During the regular season he led the Mariners in scoring with eight goals and one assist for 17 points, and he ranked fifth in the conference in goals per game and sixth in points per game. In NECC contests he contributed four goals and an assist for nine points.
Gleason and Huguenin were two of the four midfielders selected to the second team. Gleason, a first team selection a year ago, played in 15 games and finished with three goals and two assists for eight points. In conference play he netted a pair of goals and also tacked on an assist. Huguenin, a newcomer to the Mitchell squad this season, started all 17 games and had one goal to go along with three assists.
Woodford, a goalkeeper, earned all-conference second team honors after finishing as an honorable mention pick last season. He started all seven NECC contests and recorded a 1.33 goals-against average with one shutout.
Both Burkart and Grandy played in all 17 games as integral members of the Mitchell backfield. The defensive duo helped the Mariners to a pair of shutouts and helped hold opponents to 1.28 goals per game in conference play.
Mitchell finished with an overall record of 7-8-2 and placed fourth in the NECC with a mark of 4-2-1. The Mariners qualified for the NECC Championship for the third straight season but were eliminated by Southern Vermont College in the quarterfinals by a 2-1 final.
