WBB Stumbles at Babson
BABSON PARK, Mass. — Megan Bauman scored a game-high 21 points to pace four players in double figures as Babson College cruised to a 93-45 win over visiting Mitchell College in women's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.
The game was the first ever between the two programs. With the win, Babson is off to its best start in a decade at 9-0. Mitchell dropped to 0-2 on the year.
Kelly Walsh finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Nicole Hiller recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Beavers. Katie Jones also scored 15 points to go along with three assists and three steals in the victory.
Amina Wiley scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Mariners. Le'Sandra Turner added eight points and two assists while Alexia Watson chipped in six points and six boards.
Wiley scored six quick points to give Mitchell an early 8-4 lead before the Green and White took control with an 18-4 run that included three-pointers by Bauman, Walsh and Jade Perry to build a 22-12 advantage with 2:08 to go in the first quarter. The Beavers were up 10 at the end of one and used another triple by Walsh, a three-point play by Hiller and a transition layup by Samantha Smith to stretch their lead to 35-17 less than three minutes into the second.
Babson closed the period with a 14-4 run to push its margin to 51-24 at the break, and got hoops from Walsh, Bauman and Jones on its first three possessions of the third quarter. Jones and Walsh combined for 13 points as the Beavers outscored the Mariners 22-8 in the stanza to build a 73-32 advantage.
The Green and White took its biggest lead of the game at 90-42 on a layup by Caroline Clark with less than three minutes to play.
The Beavers shot 47.8 percent from the floor and turned 21 Mitchell turnovers into 20 points. Babson also outscored the visitors 40-26 in the paint and finished with a 45-42 edge on the glass.
The Beavers return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m., while the Mariners visit St. Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
