WBB Tops Albertus Magnus in Season Finale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's basketball team closed out its shortened 2020-21 season with a 60-57 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Saturday night.
Amina Wiley shot 10-for-12 from the floor and finished with game highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Mariners. Le'Sandra Turner added 11 points, eight boards and four blocks while Leilani McClellan contributed eight points and five rebounds. Caitlyn Scott paced the Falcons with 20 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Kyah Nowlin got the game started with a long three-point jumper to give the Falcons the early 3-0 lead. The Mariners responded with a short 4-0 burst to take the advantage before a Natasha Rivera free throw tied it at 4-4 with a little over six minutes remaining in the first. The teams traded baskets until the two-minute mark of the quarter when the Mariners pulled ahead 11-8 on a pair of lay ups by Chelsea Marcano.
The Mariners opened the second quarter hot, going on a 7-0 run on a pair of lay ups and a three by Sam McKenna to take a double-digit lead at 18-8. A Rivera lay-up got the Falcons back on track, sparking a 9-2 run by the hosts to make it a three-point game at 20-17. A Mariners' lay-up was immediately erased by a Nowlin lay-up and a 3-pointer by Alexis Pendziwater to tie it at 22-22 with 3:26 remaining in the half. The Mariners finished the half on a 4-0 run to lead 26-22 at the break.
The Mariners opened the second half on a short 4-2 spurt to make it a six-point game at 30-24. The Falcons quickly cut the deficit to three, and a Nowlin trey tied it at 32-32 with 5:30 left in the third. Later in the period, the Falcons pulled away behind a 7-2 run that included a three-pointer by Scott and a pair of lay ups by Rivera. Wiley netted a quick bucket to make it a three-point game, 41-38, heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mariners burst out of the gate with a 5-0 run to take a two-point lead a minute into the fourth quarter. A pair of Nowlin free throws tied it at 43-43 with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation. The teams traded baskets until the six-minute mark, with Mitchell holding a one-point lead at 49-48. The teams continued trading baskets until Emma Pierson tied it at 54-54 with just under four minutes remaining. Turner sank a short jumper to put the Mariners in front for good, and McKenna added two free throws in the final moments to clinch the victory.
Mitchell finished the abbreviated season with an overall record of 1-5.
