Woodford Tabbed NECC Player of the Week
ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Mitchell College sophomore Kevin Woodford was
named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the
sport of men's soccer, as announced by the conference on Monday
afternoon.
Woodford, a goalkeeper, was a key factor last week as the Mariners
clinched a postseason berth in the upcoming NECC Championship. On
the final day of the regular season, he made four saves at Southern
Vermont College to preserve a 1-0 shutout. He allowed only one goal
in 180 minutes and finished with 13 saves for the week.
Woodford allowed only five goals in conference play during the
regular season and ranked second in the NECC in goals against
average (0.93) against conference opponents. In 14 starts he
finished with three shutouts, 74 saves and an overall goals against
average of 1.44.
Mitchell (5-11-0 overall, 3-4-0 NECC), the fifth seed in the 2009
NECC Championship, will play at fourth-seeded Southern Vermont
College (10-7-1 overall, 3-3-1 NECC) in the quarterfinals on
Wednesday, November 4 at 2 p.m. The winner advances to play
top-seeded Daniel Webster College (10-5-0 overall, 6-1-0 NECC) on
Friday, November 6.
