PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior captain Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.) scored his first goal of the season, but that was all the offense the Mitchell College men's soccer team could produce, as the Mariners fell to Johnson & Wales University 4-1 on Tuesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Lucey's goal, the 15th of his career, was delivered in the 33rd minute, yet came after the Wildcats opened the game with three unanswered goals. Junior Carlos Andrade was one of four players to score for JWU, opening the scoring off an assist by sophomore Bruno Teixeira 4:17 into the match. Senior Connor Elliot made it 2-0 with his third goal of the fall in the 20th minute, before graduate student Aidan Bagley made it 3-0 four minutes later by converting on a penalty kick opportunity.
After Lucey's goal made it 3-1 at halftime, Teixeira capped the scoring at the 66:12 mark off an assist by Elliot. Lucey finished with a team-high three shots on goal, while freshman Sebastian Duffy (Groton, Conn.) was the only other Mitchell player to register a shot on net. The Wildcats outshot the Mariners 32-7 overall and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Sophomore Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) faced 14 shots and turned away a season-high 10 across 90 minutes in goal. Declan Caster picked up the win in goal, surrendering just one goal and making one save. Sean Furtek came on for the second half for JWU and turned in a clean sheet in 45 minutes of action.
The Mariners (0-4-1) will look to collect their first GNAC victory of the season when they return to action at home on Saturday, September 21, against Anna Maria College. Winners of five straight, the Wildcats (6-1, 4-0 GNAC) return to play on Saturday, September 21, at Emmanuel College (MA).
